Pompeii Casts. Victim numbered 1, plaster-cast made in 1863, from Vicolo degli Scheletri.

Victim 1 is an adult male, over 20 years of age.

The body was found on 3rd February 1863, in the vicolo degli Scheletri, at the crossroads with vicolo della Maschera.

There is the presence of drapery on the head, bust, waist, hips and, perhaps, the right thigh, hypothetically referable to a tunic.

Said to be found with casts numbered 2 and 3, a small distance from cast number 4.

The location of the other three victims found near no. 1 was not precisely reported: these were casts no. 2, 3, 4.

In particular, victims 2 and 3 were 10 palms (about 2.5m) from the corner of insulae 10 and 13 of Regio VII.

Fiorelli, in the Giornale di Napoli, simply stated that they were not far from where the first victim was (n.1).

In fact, no. 4 was located about 25m from the other three bodies.

In his description of this plaster-cast in his Guida di Pompei, 1877, Fiorelli described –
“Man, [no.1], fallen in the lapilli, which does not preserve the impression of the back or of the right arm. The swelling of the stomach is due to a piece of ash having broken off at the time when the gesso was formed. (Reg.VII, insula IX, via quarta).
